      <description>&lt;p&gt;Valerian is marketed as a calming agent. The evidence behind that claim is thinner than the shelf space it occupies.&lt;/p&gt;&#xA;&lt;p&gt;The herb is better studied for sleep than for stress, and even the sleep data is modest. The small double-blind trials that have tested valerian against situational stress return weak, inconsistent signals. Some show a calming effect. Others show nothing. The body of research is not large enough, nor clean enough, to call the question settled. What survives scrutiny is a plausible mechanism rather than a proven outcome: valerenic acid, the active compound, interacts with the brain&amp;rsquo;s GABA system in a manner loosely analogous to benzodiazepines. A mechanism is not a result, and human trials have repeatedly failed to convert the one into the other.&lt;/p&gt;</description>
